WATCH | Benni blasts 'silly' SA players

A frustrated Benni McCarthy blasted "silly" South African players for not sticking to the basics of football after his AmaZulu side secured a narrow victory over TS Galaxy in a DStv Premiership clash.

Usuthu extended their unbeaten run to six matches across all competitions after recording a narrow 1-0 win over TS Galaxy, courtesy of a second-half goal from Luvuyo Memela.

Despite the win, a visibly frustrated McCarthy blasted his players when answering a question to his possible frustrations.

"Players not listening, when you have a job to do it's very simple, McCarthy told SuperSport TV post-match.

"I don't understand how many times you have to say to players to play simple!

"Football is a complicated game because silly players want to make it so complicated. [They] want to do things that they're not accustomed to doing.

"Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, the best players in the world don't even sometimes do that but here in South Africa our level is there [below par] but then we want to do that.

"That's what we were doing and it was frustrating the life out of me, just a simple give-and-go, just a one-two pass, simple football.

"Everyone complicates it, then a team like TS Galaxy, yes I said they were going to fight because they have a new coach, but if we just play the simple game that we usually play we'd put three or four [goals] past them.

"They go down with a player, down to ten men you still feel that they can get that goal."

McCarthy then proceeded to lambast the standard and mentality of South African players after a frustrating evening.

"South African players, not just AmaZulu players, we all have to learn how to bloody play to our strengths.

"If you're not accustomed to doing something, then don't do it and that's what South African players do.

"Then they wonder why our levels don't go up, we keep being mediocre because we keep wanting to be special when we learning how to walk and that frustrates me.

"My team is doing it now but you know you see it every single week when you watch South African football. Then you say my God, our level is there [below par] let's play to our levels.

"Let's play to our best so then we can make those jumps, but we want to go from crawling to sprinting."
