The story of former Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town star Deolin Mekoa is something of a mystery, and one of his former coaches explains what could have happened.
After a promising start in 2014, the clubless former Bafana Bafana international has seen his career regress after at one stage being a wanted man as he was linked with all big three clubs of South African football.
Mamelodi Sundowns tried twice to bring him to Chloorkop but a move could not materialise, with Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia confirming the Tshwane side's offers back in 2016.
His former coach at the junior national teams Thabo Senong says it is a concern to see South Africa losing so many talented players.
"With that talent, I'm a bit concerned how he has regressed," Senong tells KickOff.com.
"Deolin has always been a very focused and hardworking footballer. That's the nature of football, you need to have luck sometimes, you need to have a good relationship with your coaches, management and teammates, you need to be motivated all the time.
"When we qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, I thought Deolin will move to Europe. He was at his best peak between 2015 to 2017, he was effective and flexible tactically.
"He is athletic, technically gifted and possesses a good game insight that allows him to play as a left-back, left-midfield, central defensive midfield, or central attacking midfield. He is coachable and humble."

Senong remains optimistic: "I'm certain he will play in the DStv league again or he might even move abroad because of all his good qualities. He has to take full responsibility for his regression in my opinion.
"Having a full-time personal sports psychologist should be a standard norm for our footballers, we are losing talent in abundance. Players have too many distractions. There is a thin line between regression and progression.
"Our players should be encouraged to have their own full-time sports psychologists, spiritual chaplains, personal mentors, personal trainers and life coaches.
"The competitive demands of the game continue to expose the shortage of this essential supporting pillars. Personally I enjoyed coaching him at the national team, he's a special player."
