Full marks for Pirates teenager

Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer says he was impressed with the return that he got from teenage defender Thabiso ‘Pepe’ Sesane after playing from start to finish for the first time on Sunday.

Sesane partnered Ntsikelelo Nyauza in central defence in the absence of Happy Jele, Thulani Hlatshwayo and Innocent Maela and at the end of the game there was nothing to suggest this was his first full shift in the senior team.

"We have in the past had good friendly games from him and he has also had minutes in the Nedbank and the international games," says Zinnbauer.

Sesane has previously had minutes in the Nedbank Cup and CAF Confederations Cup with his only appearance in the league having been two minutes against Cape Town City in February.

On Sunday, the 19-year-old stood up to whatever Maritzburg threw in his direction walking away with a good measure of pride in what he had done in helping the team keep a clean sheet on the day.

"Now he was a starter, and I am very happy that he make [a good game]. You see, he is calm on the ball against a team that plays high on the press, so it is not easy to play against this team.

"They had nothing to lose so they played completely high, but 'Pepe' found a good solution all the time. He also needed teammates and they helped him, so I am happy about Pepe’s performance.

"It was not easy to play against an opponent who had nothing to lose, so that is why we had new players on the field like Pepe. We have a good feeling about him and gave him the trust because we have all this information about what he can give us.

"It is always a risk, but this is what we have now. At the end of the day what was important is the result, because we have had a lot of players with a lot of games in their legs and we also had players with the game on Wednesday in their heads.

"It is not easy for players to just come back and make a good performance because you need time. We are happy about the result."

Sesame only turns 20 next month and was promoted to the first team late last year as injuries took their toll on the Pirates squad.
