Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star Teko Modise believes current PSL Footballer of the Season Themba Zwane is more than capable of defending his title.
Modise is currently the only footballer in South Africa to have bagged the top award twice in a row, after doing so during his time with Pirates in the 2007/2008 and 2008/09 seasons.
After a great 2019/20 season, 'Mshishi' was crowned the best player in Mzansi and has continued from where he left off as he has now scored seven goals in eight games in the current campaign.
“The way he has performed so far, I think he is capable of that [defending his Footballer of the Season crown],” Modise tells KickOff.com.
“And also, what can help him is that he is surrounded by players that are very good. That also helps and gives him an added advantage.
“Mshishi's game has grown so much, he doesn't only provide assists, he also bangs in goals, and he's very, very influential. To carry a team like Mamelodi Sundowns is a big, big thing knowing that there are so many superstars that are there, those are great signs.
“So, for me, if there's one person that I think can actually break that record, it's Mshishi. What worked for me is that it was never my ambition to get it for the second time.
“I was just looking to continue with the form I was in and actually up my stats I had the previous season – if I scored eight goals, I wanted to score 12 or 13 the next season.
“But also, what is helping him is that he is playing for a team that wants to win everything that they play for. So, therefore he also wants to contribute as much as he can, and he still stands a good chance of beating his own record and getting more goals.
“What's important is getting goals. I just hope that he doesn't get any injuries this season, if they just manage his games very well, because he has played so many games in the last few years.”
