Swallows fail to seal Buchanan deal

KickOff.com can reveal that Swallows FC will not be landing the services of midfielder Keagan Buchanan after a proposed deal collapsed.

As earlier reported by this website, Buchanan was in negotiations to join Swallows on a free transfer following the player's early departure from Maritzburg United in January.

The 29-year-old, who was previously on the books of Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic, had been in Johannesburg where he was underwent Covid-19 testing prior to joining the Soweto side last week.

However, despite a short-term deal until the end of the season having initially been agreed in principle, the club sought an added option at the 11th hour, which ultimately thwarted the move.

"We had agreed a short-term deal until the end of the 2020/21 season, with a view at negotiating a new deal beyond that at a later stage," Keegan Wasserfall of Siyavuma Sports Group explains.

"Buchanan had travelled up to Johannesburg and was ready to report for training but the club then insisted on an option in his contract, and a longer term couldn't be agreed upon."

The former South Africa junior international made 16 appearances for the Team of Choice this season, missing just one game – coincidentally against Swallows – due to a yellow-card suspension.
