Komphela: Rhulani is a monster

Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela has called for Orlando Pirates coach Rhulani Mokwena to be supported, lest young coaches are denied similar opportunities.

Mokwena is four games into his head coaching career being thrust into the hot seat upon the sudden departure of Milutin Sredojevic a fortnight ago.

Having come through the ranks from junior football and previously being mentored by Komphela some 10 years ago at Platinum Stars, the two share a strong bond both personally and professionally.

And with Mokwena having already fallen upon trying times with Pirates as they endure a sharp dip in form, Komphela – known to be an avid educator – has explained why it is imperative that the budding tactician be afforded some time and support.

“It gives great pride and pleasure [to see how far Rhulani has come], and not that the opportunity is just being given or granted but that it is deservedly so,” said ‘Jola’.

“I’ve worked with Rhulani; we’ve had lots of interactions, and many of us know him – he’s just a monster when it comes to consuming information.

“He’s still very young and has a bright future in him. Now, if we want to give hope to the rest of the young up and coming coaches but want to switch off this light in Rhulani, it would be catastrophic.”
