Komphela: We could have done better

Amakhosi made it three wins from three when they beat Ea Lla Koto 3-1 in their opening Absa Premiership match of 2017 at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The result sees Chiefs remain within one point of log leaders Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City, who also grabbed convincing wins in their respective fixtures last night.

However, Komphela feels, though the result was favourable, his troops could have been more clinical in the final third.

"We didn't start very well, you could see Free State Stars were more comfortable on the ball," he said after the match.

"Even though, for whatever reason, both teams at the beginning of the match couldn't keep possession, and it took another 20 minutes for us to get into the rhythm.

"We then started passing the ball and created openings but, in as much as one would say it was a 3-1 [result], it wasn't as easy as the score [suggests].

"We could have made it even better, score-wise, but there were moments where towards the end of first half you could feel them coming through.

"Maybe I have to go back and look at [the match] with less emotion... But as is, I felt we could have done better. Yes, we won it, we are happy, but we could have done better."

Having conceded from a Rooi Mahamutsa set-piece late on, Komphela admits it was a soft goal and felt his defensive wall should have dealt with the threat a lot better.

"I thought it was a soft goal, even the free-kick itself, we shouldn't have committed the foul there, there was no need," he lamented.

"After the fould, when Mahamutsa played the ball, we jumped. Sometimes keeping your eyes on the ball, and they could have maybe kept their feet on the grass, and we would have defended that.

"But one good thing is, yes, we scored three beautiful goals and I'm happy with that."

The once beleagured tactician further revealed his satisfaction with the debut of new striker Gustavo Paez, who came on as a second half substitute and looked lively as he linked up with his new teammates.

"Also, Gustavo Paez, I'm sure you could see some glimpses of somebody who has qualities or attributes of a good striker, and we are happy. With time he will get there," he concluded.
