Stats show Chiefs still hold edge over Downs

Champions Mamelodi Sundowns will continue their tense rivalry with Kaizer Chiefs when the latest encounter rolls out as a league fixture away at Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane on Sunday.

This will be the 51st league meeting between The Brazilians and AmaKhosi since domestic football switched into the PSL in 1996.

It will also be the fixture that will hold the record of having been played out the most between two clubs to date through the PSL era as Sundowns set chase for their twelfth league title while Chiefs remain stuck on four.

Though Sundowns have been the dominant force in domestic football through the PSL era more so through the last decade they have an inferior record against Chiefs.

Of the 50 league matches that have been played between the two clubs since August 1996, Chiefs have won 20 with Sundowns on 16.

The other 14 matches have been drawn.

AmaKhosi took all three points in the two rivals’ last league meeting in April with Dumisani Zuma scoring the winner.

They were also the winners on a 2-0 scoreline in the first-ever PSL league meeting in December 1996 with Thabo Mooki and Pollen Ndlanya the scorers on the day.

The Brazilians scored three the last time they took three points from AmaKhosi in October last year with Peter Shalulile, Kermit Erasmus and Themba Zwane on target just like they also put three in their first-ever league win in May 1997 with Raphael Chukwu and August Makalakalane (brace) scoring.

The 10 most recent league meetings have had each club winning four with two ending in draws.

As Chiefs coach, Stuart Baxter has won three league matches, drawn twice and lost once which was during his first stint with AmaKhosi when he delivered two league titles in three years before leaving a frustrated man.

The measure of the rivalry between Sundown and Chiefs is in the fact that the two clubs are the most successful in the PSL era with The Brazilians having since overtaken AmaKhosi at the top in their trophy count.

The men from Chloorkop have 21 titles while those that are based at Naturena have not moved from 20 since 2015.
