SA U-23 player ratings vs Denmark

REPORT: SA undone by the Danes

Itumeleng Khune - 8

Showed his experience to keep South Africa in the game with a brilliant one-on-one save to deny Denmark captain Vibe, who was clean through on goal in the 29th minute. Again denied Vibe in the 36th minute with a low stop under pressure. Was left somewhat exposed by his defence when he conceded in the 69th minute.

Tebogo Moerane - 5

Quiet as Denmark played through the middle but provided little support down the left flank, with Mekoa also lacking supply in attack. Taken off at half-time, after very little contribution to the team’s cause.

Rivaldo Coetzee - 6

Not a commanding performance against the Danes as they broke in behind, and he lacked communication with Mathoho. Played a well-weighted ball to pick out the run of Dolly on the half-hour mark, but the chance ended with Mothiba hitting the crossbar. He was caught ball watching along with Mathoho for Denmark's opening goal midway through the second half.

Erick Mathoho - 6

Looked a shadow of himself as he left gaps in central defence, while his aerial play was lacking too. Could have been punished in the 29th minute when Vibe broke through on goal. Also caught ball watching as Skov slipped through behind to open the scoring for Denmark.

Abbubaker Mobara - 7

Defended excellently to cut out a Denmark counter-attack in the 47th minute, which could have been dangerous for Khune. Also provided good options down the left flank when attacking.

Kwanda Mngonyama - 4

Sluggish. Continually caught out in possession and left the defence exposed through the middle on a number of occasions. Tried to join in attacks, but produced very little threat. Was replaced by Ntshangase after 77 minutes.

Gift Motupa – 8

Had a good opportunity to open the scoring in the seventh minute after being picked out by Dolly, but saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Hojbjerg. Forced a save from a free-kick from 19-yards out in the 74th minute. Forced another fine save with an effort from range in the 79th minute. Worked tirelessly to try and create opportunities and also helped to defend.

Deolin Mekoa – 7

Didn’t have much to do in the first half as he lacked supply down the left flank while Dolly was allowed a free role. Much more effective in the second half when he was moved to left-back in place of Moerane, and provided attacking options up front.

Keagan Dolly - 8

Lively from the start, excellent one-two play with Motupa in the seventh minute, which ended with Hojbjerg making a great save. Thunderous shot from 35 yards out was pushed on to the crossbar in the 40th minute. Worked hard and was in the middle of all South Africa's attacks.

Aubrey Modiba - 7

Had some good moments on the ball as he combined with Motupa and Dolly in attack, and showed positive signs when attacking down the right wing. Worked hard to create space and opportunities.

Lebo Mothiba - 6

Didn’t see much of the ball in the first half, but saw his 30th minute effort hit the crossbar after Hojbjerg got a slight touch on his shot. Struggled to create space for himself up front and failed to create opportunities for teammates. Was taken off for Morris in the 61st minute.

SUBS:

Menzi Masuku - 6

Came on for Moerane at half-time. Gave away possession in good areas and failed to create clear openings. Helped out in midfield but failed to track back quickly during Denmark counter-attacks.

Tashreeq Morris - 5

Came on to replace Mothiba in the 61st minute. Received a yellow card for a late challenge shortly after coming on. Looked off the pace, and failed to create scoring opportunities.

Phumlani Ntshangase

Came on in the 77th minute for Mngonyama. Did not play long enough for a rating.
