Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler has explained former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siyanda Xulu's new role at the club.
Xulu, who has played as a defender his whole professional career, has been playing in central midfield and excelleed in recent games.
The Team of Choice are yet to lose a match since Xulu has been deployed in midfield, where he seems to have slotted in like a hand in a glove.
Coach Eric Tinkler has hailed Xulu for his excellent performances in his new role.
"I think Siyanda, to be honest, we came in a bit surprised as the technical team because we had a crisis in the defensive midfield role," he said.
"Thami [Sangweni] had hurt his hamstring so he was out, Phumlani [Ntshangase] is out for three months, Miguel [Timm] had a groin injury and so we had to figure out who can play in that role.
"Siyanda was the one that made more sense obviously to me because I played in that position before. It made sense to bring him into that role.
"So since he played there we have never lost. He solidifies that midfield. He is very good in terms of reading the game, his pressing and aggression. He is not technically gifted, neither was I, but he releases the ball nice and early."
United are set to meet Kaizer Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout semifinals at Mbombela Stadium on November 24.
