New Chiefs, Downs clash in October

It’s tough to call a winner when top rivals Amakhosi and Masandawana meet on the pitch.

This time it’s for prestige and bragging rights as Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns go head-to-head in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup 2019 on October 12 at the iconic FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

This is the second Shell Helix Ultra Cup since the showcase showdown was launched last year, and this time the two teams take each other on just two weeks before their PSL clash on Mamelodi Sundowns’ home turf, Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, on October 27. Adding an extra thrill of excitement to the match.

Already tipped to be a premier fixture on the annual soccer calendar, the showcase is delivered by Shell. “Soccer is the most popular game in the country and is a sport that has become a unifier in South Africa.  Shell believes that in rivalry, there is solidarity, even though there will be only ONE…through sports we are ONE,” explains Shell Downstream South Africa General Manager for lubricants, Anton Niemann.

To build this annual showcase into one for the fans, Shell has joined forces with event Rights Holders, Stadium Management South Africa.

“We are excited to be part of this prestigious tournament, The Shell Helix Ultra Cup, for a second year. We want to ensure the fans have the best experience possible and will be launching some exciting surprises for fans. Shell’s products are synonymous with high quality and excellence and this event will be no different. We are proud to bring this world-class tournament to soccer fans across South Africa,” adds Niemann.

“The Shell Helix Ultra Cup is a showcase of one of the best rivalries that South African football has to offer – the never-ending battle between Amakhosi and Masandawana,” explains SMSA Tournament Chairman, Jacques Grobbelaar.

“The concept to create a new annual fixture is not only an exciting idea, it also offers soccer fans another opportunity to see the best talent in South Africa on the FNB Stadium pitch, battling for the bragging rights to lift this trophy. Partnering with the Shell Helix Ultra team, as leaders in their industry, will ensure we bring an “Ultra” experience to the soccer fans who love these teams,” adds Grobbelaar.

The 2019 Shell Helix Ultra Cup is going to be a spectacular match day between Mamelodi

Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs – with plenty to play for on the day. Both teams are ready, and we will once again head to FNB Stadium to see who lifts the cup on 12 October 2019. The match will be played in the standard format over 90 minutes.
