Dos Santos says what Hunt can't

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs head coach Sergio dos Santos has outlined exactly why Gavin Hunt is struggling with Ernst Middendorp's squad this season.

Hunt knows there are big problems to solve at The Village but has held his tongue in interviews this season, more than he would have in the past at his previous clubs when fewer eyes and ears would scrutinise his every move.

Dos Santos though, a former Chiefs, Hellenic and Cape Town Spurs midfielder who also had a spell as Amakhosi coach during the '90s, is free to offer a detailed assessment of the current Glamour Boys.

He believes things will be very difficult for Hunt this season despite all his pedigree and experience of coaching in South Africa.

"The starting point is of course he's got a lot of injured players and that certainly is a very important factor, there's no question about it," Dos Santos tells KickOff.com.

"Nurkovic for example, if you don't have him in the frontline your attacking options are straight away weakened. So that means they can't score goals, and we can see that they can't score goals because how many goals have they scored in the last three, four matches? Nothing. So it's telling you straight away that's a very, very big problem.

"Then at the back it's a problem because you've got injuries in the middle of the backline as well. Plus in the midfield you don't have an anchor player, a player that contains the pressure and releases other players to play. So once you don't have that, that means the spine of the team is already in trouble.

"And then you've got a lot of youngsters now, and these youngsters obviously they've got a lot of potential but to play at that level of football, if you don't have experienced players around you that can carry you a little bit, that becomes very, very difficult.

"And obviously they are under a lot pressure because the youngsters have got to produce the goods. They are not 100 percent ready for that level of football yet. There's no supporters in the stands to motivate them, to lift them up.

"The team itself is struggling because the older players are injured or struggling with their form. I mean Khama Billiat is half the player he used to be. It's unbelievable. And one hears stories about the way that he is behaving and so on which is very, very disturbing. So it's going to be very, very difficult.

"Of course the biggest problem is that they are not able to buy players for the next two window periods. And that is very, very serious. That is the biggest factor of the lot, because you know Gavin with his experience he would be able to take what Kaizer Chiefs has got there, he would then sign three or four players in specific positions, and very quickly will sort it out.

"But without that, it's going to be very, very hard. It's a very tough job that he's got on his hands now, because there are players there that are simply not good enough. It's going to be a very tough battle because the coach can't do it by himself, he needs the players obviously, and the players need the coach.

"The biggest priority for Kaizer Chiefs is now to rebuild. Don't worry about the cups, don't worry about anything. Anything that comes is going to be a bonus. Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have bought all the players in South Africa, there's nothing left now for other clubs."
