'AK-47' teaches top Chiefs, Bucs strikers

It's been a while now since Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates strikers have found the back of the net, and not just because of the PSL suspension.

The Soweto giants' major goal threats like Samir Nurkovic, Leonardo Castro, Gabadinho Mhango and Tshegofatso Mabasa have not added to their goal tallies for several matches.

Malawian speedster Mhango is the current Absa Premiership top scorer with 14 goals. Serbian strongman Nurkovic is on 11 goals, while Colombian ace Castro is on seven.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroka Swallows and Bloemfontein Celtic striker Sandile 'AK-47' Ndlovu outlines what each player is doing wrong.

"You know about Nurkovic, let me tell you, he reminds me of myself with his stubbornness," Ndlovu tells KickOff.com.

"He reminds me of my playing days. I always knew how to deal with situations. Problem with Nurkovic, it's not like he will never score again, he will score, he is stubborn. But the teams have figured out the coach's system you see.

"Because they've now realised that Nurkovic is good with his head, they let him try to make runs. What is happening is they will play this thing of crosses, but what remains now is for the playing system to change for them to be able to continue scoring.

"Also him individually, he must improvise in his runs. He is a target now, so he must make runs and become more mobile. Strikers must understand that the defenders are the ones marking them, it's not them who are marking the defenders. Him making runs will surely confuse opposition defenders.

"As for Castro, he must regain his confidence. Castro is a big striker, a top striker, but his problem is he's like a child. He becomes overexcited, that's one thing I can tell you. A striker can miss ten goals and score only one. So now if you don't have a big heart as a striker you will have a problem in football.

"So Castro needs to build his confidence because the coach has given him a chance, so he is the one who is supposed to be scoring if Nurkovic is not scoring. So he must build his confidence by just scoring, by communicating with Nurkovic.

"The problem with most of today's strikers is that they make their runs wide so they can make a cross. If you are crossing a ball as a striker, who are you crossing for? Because you are the one who should be receiving that cross.

"I remember it was Gordon Igesund who said 'Sandile Ndlovu is dangerous inside the kitchen' because I was always there.

"Mhango, what he must do, his confidence is right, his positioning is excellent. One thing he must know though is that a goal comes on its own. He seems desperate to score.

"Don't go and fetch a ball from the likes of [Happy] Jele. They must know how to calculate their distance on the field when they are playing, these boys.

"Okay Mabasa, problem with these boys is they don't want to be inside the box. His runs are very good, but problem is he wants to collect the ball. They must just know how to force a defender to lose the ball."
