Mamelodi Sundowns star Rushine De Reuck has shared details of his trial with Portuguese giants Porto during the early stages of his career.
De Reuck has become a household name in South Africa where he currently plies his trade with reigning DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns and is a mainstay within the national team set-up.
The 25-year-old made his way to the top via spells at Hellenic and Maritzburg United and his talent was evident from a young age, as was reflected when he was afforded an opportunity to trial at Portuguese side Porto during his formative years.
"It was after my third season with Africa Soccer Development Academy that Mr Tim Sukazi approached me and told me of a trial he had arranged with FC Porto in Portugal, De Reuck said in an interview with Mamelodi Sundowns Magazine.
"At first I thought he was joking because Porto is such a big European team.
"I only felt the full excitement [of the opportunity] when I eventually trained with the under-19 set-up at Porto, but they ultimately delayed their decision and I ended up joining Paços de Ferreira."
While his time with the Portuguese giants was short-lived, the Bafana Bafana star made friendships at the club that have stood the test of time, including one with current Liverpool star Diogo Jota.
"...To date, we still chat almost daily about life and our football journies," De Reuck, who recently received a signed Liverpool jersey from his former teammate, added.
"The jersey he gave me a few months ago will remain one of my most prized collections."
