Sundowns sweep aside City

Polokwane City got off to a bright start as they put pressure on the Sundowns defence in the opening exchanges, but the hosts were unable to really test Kennedy Mweene.

Sundowns then got into their groove and started to spread the ball around with intent as the momentum shifted in the visitors’ favour.

The defending Absa Premiership champions were duly rewarded after a great run from Teko Modise, who beat three defender and found Elias Pelembe, and the winger unselfishly passed the ball for Malajila inside the area, who slotted home to hand the Brazilians the lead in the 35th minute.

Sundowns enjoyed most of the possession as they looked to keep their lead going into the half-time break.

The second half was all Sundowns, as the Tshwane-side dominated in terms of possession and chances created, with a number of shots coming in from range.

Themba Zwane made it 2-0 to ‘Downs right on the hour mark, after Malajila put him through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Teko Modise then added the third and final goal with a composed finish, after a brilliant aerial pass from Hlompho Kekana, in the 73rd minute.

Mosimane then looked to close the back door as Asavela Mbekile was brought on to replace Zwane, and Bafana Ba Style deservedly walked away with the three points.

The loss for Polokwane City is their fifth straight defeat and remain in 15th place on the Absa Premiership standings, while the victory sees Mamelodi Sundowns move into fourth place behind Bidvest Wits.
