Mayo: Chiefs regret Xulu decision

Xulu is resurrecting his career at Maritzburg United, where he’s made 29 appearances in all competitions this season.

The 26-year-old endured a tough two seasons at Naturena under coach Steve Komphela, after returning from Russian side FC Rostov.

Xulu, who returned to the club for a second spell after playing for their development side, signed a five year contract with Amakhosi but things did not work out for the defender. He found himself playing Multichoice Diski Challenge football, while the likes of Lorenzo Gordinho, Mulomowandau Mathoho and Daniel Cardoso played in the first team.

Xulu was seen as a replacement for Tefu Mashamaite, who left Amakhosi after winning the 2014/15 PSL footballer of the season award.

The central defender is now enjoying his football with the Team of Choice and has recently captained the side in the absence of suspended skipper Bevan Fransman.

“It was wise a move to join Maritzburg United because he was not getting game time at Chiefs,” Mayo tells

“I’m sure Chiefs realise that they they made a big mistake by letting him go, because he’s really in top form and doing very well week in and week out.

“Although Chiefs will never admit that, but I’m sure deep down they regret letting him go. But let's be honest, it’s never easy to play for Chiefs and once you are not playing regularly in the starting line-up, people tend to forget about you.

“So I’m sure Xulu – not earning a regular place – fans forgot about him. But if you are playing week in and out and you are performing, fans will never forget you. Even if you have picked up an injury fans become anxious for you to come back in the starting line-up.

“So it's important to hit the ground running when you join Chiefs.”
