Pirates to face favoured whipping boys

Orlando Pirates will head out to Gqeberha this weekend to face Chippa United keen to preserve their best winning run against any opponent currently playing in the PSL.

Such has been the impressive run of results that Pirates have had against Chippa United that they are now sitting on eleven wins in a row and will reach a dozen with another victory on Saturday afternoon.

Pirates have not enjoyed such dominance over any PSL team as their second-best run at the moment is just four wins in a row against Maritzburg United.

The bookmakers will take this information into effect in putting together the odds for this tie being played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Through those 11 consecutive wins recorded by The Bucs against their cannon fodder opponents, only one wasn’t a league fixture.

Pirates have not dropped a single point against Chippa from the last 30 that have been available to play for between the two teams.

This means for each of the past five seasons, the Soweto giants have been guaranteed six points, rather unusual in the PSL considering the inconsistencies.

In those 11 victories in a row, Pirates have scored 22 goals against seven by The Chilli Boys.

Since Chippa won promotion in 2012, they have played Pirates in 17 games winning three, drawing one and losing 13.

Mandla Ncikazi, Fadlu Davids and The Ghost will be encouraged about such numbers while Gavin Hunt will argue that all this happened when he wasn’t at the club, so it doesn’t count for him as the Chippa coach.

"Every game gives you different scenarios and the mentality is the most important thing that we have to try and work on," says Hunt whose side has already drawn with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates have started with two draws and one win while Chippa have won, drawn and lost.
