'Makusu one of the greatest in history'

Orlando Pirates' latest signing Jean-Marc Makusu has been lauded as one of the most complete strikers in DR Congo history.

The 28-year-old striker looked set for a lucrative move to Botola side RS Berkane last year in a deal worth R7-million after accepting a three-year contract worth R500 000 per month.

As one of the leading strikers on the continent with 27 league goals scored in the 2018/19 Linafoot, added to the five goals in eight CAF Champions League games, his career looked set for new heights.

However, a horrific leg break ended his transfer to the Moroccan side that lifted the Confederation Cup this season and he has only recently returned to full fitness after missing the entire 2019/20 campaign.

But DRC football analyst Junior Kiaku believes his injury nightmare won't deter his ambitions to fulfil his potential and claims Pirates have secured one of the nation's greatest-ever strikers.

"This is a great way for Makusu to get back to the great footballer he was as he was on a serious run of form before he broke his leg that's kept him off the field for over a year now," Kiaku tells KickOff.com.

"Makusu is one of the best strikers we ever had. When we talk about strikers, we talk about finishers, killers but also technical ones who know how to position themselves, how to dribble and beat defenders one-v-one.

"In that category, we have [Dieumerci] Mbokani who's excellent then you have Makusu. These two are the most complete strikers Congo has ever had.

"His move to Orlando Pirates can only be beneficial to him and hopefully he can replicate what he did with Vita Club in South Africa."

Makusu has experience of top-flight football in Congo, Hungary, Belgium and Egypt – with an exceptional record of 18 goals in 24 CAF inter-club competition appearances.
