Pirates signing snubbed by KZN clubs

Orlando Pirates’ new signing Monnapule Saleng is proof of why failure to win a contract at one club does not spell the end having now risen to join the PSL giants.

Saleng is now with Pirates after banging 13 goals in half a season at Free State Stars in the GladAfrica Championship but could have been with AmaZulu and Golden Arrows two years ago.

"He could have been an AmaZulu or Golden Arrows player two years ago," discloses Pogiso Makhoye in the August edition of KICK OFF magazine – currently on sale – which details the signings made by Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Makhoye is the head coach of ABC Motsepe League club ORBIT College where Saleng played prior to landing a contract with Ea Lla Koto.

"AmaZulu invited him after we played Umvoti in the [2018/19] Nedbank Cup so we took him there for an assessment. They wanted to sign him but only for their MDC team, so I felt this was a step backwards.

"Golden Arrows then offered him a three-year PSL contract but then dumped us again wanting the boy to play in their MDC team as well, yet he was already 21. I was then stranded with the boy until Free State Stars took him after we played a friendly against them in Bethlehem.

"The boy is a hard worker, and I don’t doubt that he will make it at Pirates, despite his tiny body. I even told Mam’Mato [Madlala] and Stars that this boy is destined for the national team, and look where he is now after having been top scorer in the first division.

"The boy is ready, and he is going to be a star because he works for you and is humble. He will succeed at Pirates," says Makhoye.

Prior to signing for Stars, Saleng had scored 27 goals for ORBIT College in the ABC Motsepe League playing on the wing. He spent the past two years at Stars and arrives at Pirates aged 23.
