New hope for Muwowo at Pirates

Despite failing to get game time since the start of the new season, there was a glimmer of hope for Zambian midfielder Austin Muwowo's future at Orlando Pirates.

Muwowo made the Pirates bench for the first time on Wednesday, when they beat Chippa United 1-0 in a DStv Premiership clash at Orlando Stadium.

The 24-year-old has not enjoyed the fruits of his move from Nkana FC in July last year, having managed a total of only 18 minutes in the club’s colours since then.

Besides Mowowo, defender Bongani Sam and goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane are the only players who have not yet seen any action with Orlando Pirates this season.

Mpontshane remains the third-choice goalkeeper at Bucs, following the arrival of Richard Ofori from Maritzburg United, after the departed Joris Delle was also ahead of him last season.

Ofori, who was in goals when the Josef Zinnbauer-led side lifted the MTN 8 trophy last Saturday, has since become the number one keeper ahead of Wayne Sandilands.

Meanwhile, Pirates have a CAF Champions League fixture away to Angola’s Sagrada Esperanca next Tuesday and will only return to domestic footbal when they visit Mamelodi Sundowns on 2 January 2021 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
