Mathoho next in Chiefs' firing line

Kaizer Chiefs defender Mulomowandau 'Tower' Mathoho will become the latest player to face an uncertain future at the Soweto giants after a decade of service.

Mathoho is moving into the last 12 months of his current contract from July 1 with next season likely vital in his battle for a contract extension to remain at Naturena.

The lanky defender will be 33 years old at the expiration of his deal with his huge pay package a serious factor in a decision to extend.

The Bafana Bafana international experienced a difficult end to the last season but survived the axe due to still possessing a year left on his current contract.

An awful blunder against Golden Arrows in March when he mistakenly laid the ball into the path of Knox Mutizwa to score the only goal of the match was his last appearance in a Chiefs jersey.

The experienced defender was hauled off at half-time and never featured again in the remaining 10 games of the season under Stuart Baxter. While Arthur Zwane recalled the defender to sit on the bench.

Hope at the club remains that the new season will provide Mathoho with a new lease of life and renewed form to add to his 258 appearances and 25 goals to date for Chiefs.

Following Daniel Cardoso and Ramahlwe Mphahlele's departures, Mathoho is now the oldest and most experienced defender at the club.

He will be expected to guide the rest of the centre-back options Siyabonga Ngezana, Njabulo Ngcobo, Thabani Dube and Zitha Kwinika along with development graduates Thabo Mokoena and Aden McCarthy, son of former club defender Fabian McCarthy.

The other seniors at Chiefs heading into the last year of their contracts are the pair of Itumeleng Khune and Khama Billiat.
