Mayinga: Still too early for two-horse race talk

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender James Mayinga insists the Dstv Premiership title race is still wide open with a number of teams still contenders.

Following Kaizer Chiefs' crucial win over strugglers Swallows FC, the Soweto giants moved up into second place in the standings behind Mamelodi Sundowns.

The familiar look to the table could point to a two-horse title race between Amakhosi defending champions Sundowns for the remainder of the season.

"I think it's still too early to be making predictions," Mayinga tells

"The only thing that we can say is that both teams utilised their chances over the weekend.

"After 12 matches Sundowns have already amassed 30 points. So it's very important to utilise their chances now because we don't know when it may be a rainy day.

"This season the league will take many twists as everyone is hungry for success while there are no any pushovers.

"You could win but you are made to sweat for each victory. At Stellenbosch you saw that they were an in-form team but now look at their last two results.

"So anything is still possible, I still say once you break in football for a month it's more like you are starting afresh.

"When you turn your focus to Sundowns, they are in the CAF Champions League and still have to play those games but it's good for them to collect points now compared to the previous times.

"In the past, they used to clinch the title in the latter stages of the season but this time could prove different. But Chiefs can still close the gap."
