'You can't compare Bucs '94 to this team'

Premiership

South African football legend Marks Maponyane believes the current Orlando Pirates team cannot be compared to the 1994 and 1995 side in terms of talent.

A lot of similarities have been drawn between the current team and the team in 1994 that went on to clinch the African Champions Cup in 1995 due to the influx of new players this season.

After the acquisitions of Thulani Hlatshwayo, Thabang Monare, Deon Hotto and Terrence Dzvukamanja from Bidvest Wits, most of the Pirates faithful hope history can repeat itself to see their team being crowned league champions at the end of current campaign.

When Jomo Cosmos got relegated in 1993, the Buccaneers took Helman Mkhalele, Eugene Zwane, Mark Fish, Innocent Mncwango and Linda Buthelezi while the likes of Maponyane, John Moeti and Edward Motale joined from Dynamos.

But the former Bafana Bafana striker believes that is where the similarities between them and the current Pirates squad ends.

When asked if both squads are equal in terms of talent, the famous jersey No.7 tells KickOff.com: "In terms of talent? No, you can't compare. No ways.

"Why I say no ways, I mean you just look at the way they attack from the wings. Let me take the full-backs of Pirates, they are not the same as the full-backs of Pirates then. I mean Oupa Mabuza and Edward Motale... you can't, Edward was good with even 'show me the number' kind of thing, and whip in a decent cross you know. And he would do that continuously. And Fish would also surprisingly be in that box pushing forward. As he does that, Edward takes a break, he covers him. So the talent is different you know.

"Remember, the cause of Dynamos being relegated was because of the death of those couple of players from Zambia who played in the national team. But me, I left Dynamos a year before it got relegated. From Dynamos it was 'Magents', John Moeti and the likes of Gavin Lane. It was that combination of Dynamos and Blackpool. The beauty of that time is that all those players were quality in their own right .

"I mean Gavin was a solid defender, Mark Fish, Edward Motale... so we already had a spine of the team because in the middle we had Dungi, Mncwango, Linda Buthelezi you know, remember he was also with Cosmos. Then up front it became Brandon Silent, myself. Yes, there was also good quality at the back, in the middle and up front you know, so I would say yes there are similarities but let's not talk the league now. It's too early."
