One-two sucker punch for Maritzburtg

The home side had taken the lead through Evans Rusike and had a number of first half chances, but let it slip after halftime as Bradley Grobler and Jeremy Brockie scored in the space of 90 seconds.

Both sides made three changes to their starting line-ups, but it was the Team of Choice that got out of the blocks quicker and with something to prove. They should have gone ahead after just five minutes when Sheldon van Wyk squared a perfect ball to Kurt Lentjies, only for Clayton Daniels to block it on the line.

Brockie had a goalbound volley blocked at the other end before Rusike thundered a shot straight at Ronwen Williams from inside the area.

Maritzburg should have netted on 18 minutes when Rusike was played in by Lentjies. He laid on the perfect pass to Van Wyk, who fluffed his shot from four yards out.

Brockie almost made them pay soon after with a brilliant volley from distance which curved inches wide, before Mario Booysen came close with a header.

But Maritzburg got the goal their play deserved on 28 minutes – Van Wyk with a perfectly-weighted pass and Rusike shooting into the far corner.

Brockie tested Virgil Vries with another freekick, but there were no more goals in a half which the hosts dominated.

Stuart Baxter brought on Thuso Phala for Thato Mokete after the break, and the move paid immediate dividends.

After Grobler and Kingston Nkhatha came close from set-pieces, SuperSport got the equaliser on 58 minutes when the former finished calmly at the near-post after some good work from Michael Morton.

Maritzburg were still trying to find their bearings when Matsatsantsa added a second – this time Brockie with a trademark first-time volley from Grant Kekana’s cross, though the hosts’ marking was abysmal.

Tamsanqa Teyise had a chance from a corner-kick on 72 minutes but headed over, while Vries did brilliantly to save at Phala’s feet soon after.

Maritzburg almost levelled in time added on when Thamsanqa Mkhize’s free-kick forced Ronwen Williams into a fine diving save, but there was to be no heroics for the hosts as they slipped closer towards relegation - they remain a point behind Jomo Cosmos and University of Pretoria, both of whom have a game in hand.
