Mngqithi: It was a clear penalty

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi felt the defending league champions should have been awarded a penalty in their goalless draw with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

Sundowns' winning start to the season came unstuck against the top-flight new boys after playing to a goalless draw at Loftsu Versfeld.

"Two points lost because honestly speaking we pushed them from the first whistle, we never gave them time to play, we created three good opportunities from our high press, unfortunate not to get a goal or something on target," Mngqithi told SuperSport TV.

"[Peter[ Shalulile had a big chance, the captain [had a chance] in the early stages of the game it was just unfortunate that when you don't take chances against teams that are sitting back and hoping to catch you on a counter, you have to be worried.

"At a certain point I got worried that maybe this game is that game where they'll get one good counter-attack and punish us."

Mngqithi explained his reasons for bringing on defenders Tebogo Langerman and Khuliso Mudau while they were desperate for goals in the second stanza.

"We just felt that Lyle [Lakay] had run his race we wanted fresh legs because we knew that the way they were compact we had to use our width much better, because even on the right we brought on Mudau to operate with Thapelo [Morena] because we wanted to creat scoring opportunities from wide channels," he said.

"Because centrally they pushed everyone backwards, which made our lives a little bit difficult but I thought at the end it was supposed to be a penalty [although] in football you have to take whatever you got."

Mngqithi went on to complain that they were supposed to get a penalty after Keletso Makgalwa was brought down inside the box by Alfred Ndengane towards the end of the match.

"But I still believe that was a clear penalty. We have not received any update [on Keletso Makgalwa] but it was a result of that challenge that was supposed to be a penalty, in my own opinion.

"I have not even looked at the video yet but from what I saw I believe that was a very clear penalty, unfortunately players lose their careers, they get seriously damaged based on injuries like those that are not taken seriously by the match officials at times," he added.
