Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt fielded a side with no out-and-out striker, as Sibusiso Vilakazi filled the "striker's" role, which frustrated Pitso Mosimane's men for most of the match.
Mosimane was without captain Alje Schut after his freak accident in midweek, but replacement Thabo Nthethe did well to fill the gap left by the Dutch central defender.
Chances came few and far between in the first half as Sundowns were forced to efforts from long range through Hlompho Kekana and Teko Modise both having their attempts easily delt with by Moeneeb Jospehs.
The score went unchanged into the half-time break, with Sundowns clearly the more attacking of the two sides.
Wits came out in the second half and looked to hit Sundowns on the counter, but wer unable to threaten Mweene's goal.
Pelembe arguably had the best chance of the match in the 84th minute when he forced Josephs into a save after the winger unleashed a thundorous effort.
The home side piled the pressure on the visitors' defence, but the Students held firm for a well earned point away from home.
