Pitso Mosimane’s passion for CAF Champions League football has rubbed off on his players and the excitement of beginning a new campaign is at a high, according to Sibusiso Vilakazi.
The 2016 champions begin their campaign with a clash against Congolese outfit AS Otoho d’Oyo in a first leg preliminary round tie away from home on Sunday.
Sundowns were knocked out in the semi-finals of the competition last season by Moroccan outfit Wydad Casablanca and they will, as usual, be aggressive as they look to add a second star on top of their badge. It would be the perfect way to celebrate their 50th anniversary .
“Very aggressive, it’s always been like that. We always want to win it. When we get into the Champions League there’s that excitement from the team and energy and we say ‘this time around it has to be ours’,” the former Bidvest Wits captain says.
“Even last season we lost to a ver good team. This season we want to go all the way, there’s no doubt about it.”
Vilakazi compared AS Otoho to two West Africans clubs they have played against in the past.
“I can only compare from the teams we’ve played against in the Champions League. The one I can think of is Lobi Stars, the other is [AS] Vita. We were able to go through their videos to prepare ourselves.”
