Mamelodi Sundowns are keeping a ‘high press’ in their pursuit of Baroka striker Evidence Makgopa as they seek to seal the deal before the start of the Tokyo Olympics next month.
Straight after completing his first full season in the PSL, Makgopa has suddenly found himself an attraction for clubs in Gauteng, where his earnings could likely touch six figures.
Sundowns are feeling the need to have a younger forward who will provide the aerial presence they need on the African safari, having not gotten as much as they hoped out of Uruguayan forward Mauricio Affonso by now.
Affonso has battled injuries through most of his two years at Sundowns, featuring in just 22 games with a return of six goals – all of which came in his first season.
The Brazilians’ interest is therefore a matter of urgency, especially considering that other sharks may have their eyes on the 21-year-old.
For now, Baroka have been approached and, while they have shown little intent to release the reigning PSL Young Player of the Season, it is believed Downs plan to sign Makgopa and then keep him on loan in Limpopo.
It might be a viable option for Bakgaga, considering they will make money and keep the forward on their books for next season.
There has been a lot happening behind the scenes with regards to Makgopa, who scored seven goals in 29 appearances this season.
