Maboe was one of the key men last season as the Team of Choice finished the season in fourth place on 44 points, the best showing in their history. They also narrowly missed out on silverware in May, losing to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup in the final.
This season, however, has been a disaster for the side from KwaZulu-Natal. With just one victory all season, they are in danger of going down to the National First Division. New coach Muhsin Ertugral, who replaced Fadlu Davids in December, has not been able to hit the ground running as they look to register their first victory since September.
Next on their schedule is Sundowns at Loftus Stadium tonight, a difficult game for the side, but one that they could use to try get their confidence back.
“It’s very sad. I just hope that they come out of the bottom half and make it to be in the Premier League next season,” Maboe says.
During his time at Maritzburg, Maboe and company would give Sundowns a tough time.
“Sundowns is a very big team. I am not saying we only prepared well for the big teams, but going into a Sundowns game we all knew that it was the game of our lives and we all had a point to prove. What I think helped us is that we were very united. We were playing as a team and fighting for one another.
“So I am expecting a tough game, knowing that they are bottom of the league. They are going to come out guns blazing.”
