Manqoba: Pirates must give us that points

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi says they are targeting a win over Orlando Pirates to take them closer to their 'ultimate target'.

Sundowns currently sit at the summit of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership with 10 points from their opening four games and look favourites to defend their league crown.

But the challenge of fourth-placed Pirates who are just two points off at the early stages of the campaign provides another stern test of the star-studded Masandawana squad.

Mngqithi has come out to suggest that there's a clear plan in place on how to retain their league title and the Buccaneers are a team they have targeted for maximum points.

"What we've emphasised as a technical team and thanks to all the coaches that I work with and everyone that's around," he told the club's media department.

"We've emphasised on taking care of the process, and the process is the number of points we want to achieve in each cycle. Whoever happens to become an opponent in that space, we focus on that so that we achieve our desired targets and get the points we're looking for.

"Pirates is that team that must give us that points that can help us to achieve our ultimate target. So the issue of anxiety we have tried to clear that by focusing more on the process and making sure that everybody understands three points is the same, be it Pirates, Baroka or TS Galaxy, whoever."

The former Golden Arrows mentor also hinted the mentality of the players in the squad won't be overawed by the occasion against the Soweto giants despite the magnitude of the upcoming fixture.

"Let us just get the points that can help us achieve our ultimate targets and the players have responded very well over a number of games. We can't start to doubt," he added.

"But yes, of course, a game like Pirates will always have elements of pressure, intrinsic motivation and that is most likely to bring an element of anxiety, we have to control that space.

"Fortunately, a number of players that we're using are players used to playing under the pressure for a team like Sundowns."

Sundowns travel to face the Sea Robbers at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, 25, September at 15h00.
