In fairness, the Brazilians could have well netted double figures but for some glaring misses and great saves from Chilli Boys keeper Daniel Agpeyi.
Downs opened the scoring after just six minutes when Leonardo Castro capitalised on a horror clearance by Akpeyi and slotted home from six yards out.
Thamsanqa Sangweni had a rare attempt saved by Denis Onyango, but Downs kept on pressing and eventually doubled their lead in the 42nd minute - Teko Modise netting at the second attempt after being brilliantly picked out by Khama Billiat.
And Billiat got his name on the score-sheet soon afterwards, finishing in style with his left foot from distance after Chippa had lost possession in midfield.
Billiat missed a sitter soon after the restart after some clever play from the brilliant Keagan Dolly, while Castro and Cuthbert Malajila missed one-on-ones as Downs dominated, but the damage had already been done in the first half.
Pitso Mosimane even had the luxury of giving run-outs to forgotten men Lebohang Mokoena and Tiyani Mabunda as Downs moved five points clear following Mpumalanga Black Aces' goalless draw at Jomo Cosmos.
