Kapinga issued Sundowns reality check

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi says there is still a long way to go before midfielder Lesedi Kapinga can think about claiming a position in the playing squad.

Kapinga is among the many new faces at Chloorkop including Gift Motupa, Grant Margeman and Ricardo Goss who are yet to make their debut at Sundowns.

The former Tshakhuma FC star joined The Brazilians on a five-year deal this season from Black Leopards amid much excitement from fans who admired his performances for Lidoda Duvha.

But Mngqithi revealsthat Kapinga still has a lot of work to do to improve some football aspects before he can be considered for selection.

"He is still trying hard to adapt to the conditions at Sundowns. Offensively he is a very good player but he still has a lot of work to do defensively," said Mngqithi.

The joint head coach explained: "At Sundowns unfortunately we expect everybody to help the team when we don't have the ball. We work hard to try to regain the possession of the ball and that is one of the big aspects of his game that he has to improve.

"Also he is not taking care of the ball, he loses the ball cheaply. In a big team like Sundowns, if you lose the ball now and again you will get exposed to a counter-attack. Those are some of the areas he needs to improve on.

"He is a very good player and we know what he is capable of but there is still a big amount of work needed to be done for him to command a start or even a substitutes' position at Sundowns."

Sundowns have the weekend off after being knocked out of the MTN8 by Bloemfontein Celtic in their first match this season.
