Chiefs target off the mark with brace

Premiership

The rising African star targeted by Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns sent reminders about his scoring prowess again on Tuesday with a brace in setting off for the new season.

Ethiopian sensation Abubeker Nassir is being tracked by both Chiefs and Sundowns with considerations being made about probably bringing him in during the midseason transfer window or at the end of the season.

On Tuesday he had his name on the scoring charts for his club Ethiopian Coffee as they overcame Jimma Aba Jifar at the Hawassa University Stadium.

Coffee have been slow off the mark in the BetKing Ethiopian Premier League and Tuesday’s victory was their first win in five games this season with Nassir scoring his first goals for the season.

The 21-year-old left an impression in the two World Cup qualifiers that he played against Bafana with his performance now being scrutinised in the Ethiopian League whose games are being shown on television.

Last season he scored 29 goals in 22 games on his way to being crowned the league’s top goals scorer, Best Young Player, and the Most Valuable Player.

He was also the CECAFA Under-23 Challenge Best Player.

However, the standard of the league in Ethiopia has not been enough to convince the clubs to follow him.

Coffee have already set their price for Nassir who signed a three-year contract last year.

The matter of strikers at Chiefs is a subject of interest as the pair of Samir Nurkovic and Leonardo Castro are out of contract at the end of this season though the former has an option.

Nurkovic is injured at the moment while Castro has just returned from injury so they are both yet to repay the club for what they are earning.
