Bvuma giving Chiefs headaches

Premiership

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma is turning heads within the club's hierarchy with his impressive performances, leading to his squad status being reconsidered.

The solid showings of third-choice Bvuma have made the club management reconsider whether it was ever necessary to strengthen the goalkeeping department.

On their books currently, Amakhosi have Bafana Bafana international Itumeleng Khune and Nigeria national team goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, who both come with plenty experience.

There is also 25-year-old Brylon Petersen who, by goalkeeping standards, is still young and needs some grooming as he continues to wait for his senior team debut.

Meanwhile, Chiefs are still expected to unveil former Bidvest Wits shot-stopper Brandon Petersen, who is believed to have already signed with the club, along with former teammates Sifiso Hlanti and Phathutshedzo Nange, ahead of the 2021/22 season.

It is now understood that the exploits of Bvuma have led to a complete re-think within the management, with belief having grown in both their immediate and long-term future in the goalkeeping department.

"Yes, with the latest great performances from Bvuma, the club feel they have rushed looking for another keeper without giving the boy a proper chance [earlier]," a source tells KickOff.com.

"Bvuma is the club's future when it comes to goalkeeping because, unlike the others, he sticks to goalkeeping and doesn't try to be a centre-back. Balls find him in good positions because he doesn't unnecessarily leave his goal-line.

"It will be hard for the other goalkeepers to take the number one position back from him, now that the technical staff are looking to build the team around him.

"Remember, it was [Stuart] Baxter and his then-Bafana assistant Molefi Ntseki who took Bvuma to the AFCON finals in Egypt [in 2019], and now they are both members of the Chiefs coaching department. The boy will finally reach his potential.

"As for Petersen, the club don't have much choice there, they are stuck with him. Unless both parties come to some sort of agreement, Gavin's departure does not determine Petersen's future."

The Glamour Boys were reportedly keen to re-sign Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse, who has seen minimal game-time in the past two seasons, but the DStv Premiership champions still believe the 29-year-old has something more to offer their star-studded team.
