Chiefs striker axed, more to follow

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the departure of a striker but still plan to add to their list of released players before the commencement of the 2018/19 season.

Chiefs released eight players in recent weeks, incuding the likes of Pule Ekstein, Bongolethu Jayiya, Virgil Vries, Ryan Moon and Gustavo Paez, among others, but say they are not done yet.

As earlier reported on KickOff.com, the latest on the list is former youth academy graduates Emmanuel Leltlotlo and goalkeeper Brylon Petersen.

In a statement released by the club on Tuesday, it was confirmed that "two or more" could still be on their way out of Naturena as they continue their overhaul ahead of the new campaign.

"Amakhosi parted ways with no less than eight of its players in preparation of the upcoming 2019/20 season. Hendrick Ekstein, Bhongolethu Jayiya, Ryan Moon, Virgil Vries, Gustavo Páez, Khotso Malope, Emmanuel Letlotlo and Brylon Petersen have parted ways with Amakhosi for a variety of reasons," read the statement.

"Meanwhile talks are proceeding for the release of two or more players. The process of rebuilding the team ahead of the new season is underway with further announcements expected in due course."

One of the proposed exits is understood to be Colombian striker Leonardo Castro, as the club also plans to bring in one more foreign striker.

The club also announced that pre-season preparations are officially set to get underway on Wednesday, June 26, just one month before the much anticipated Carling Black Label Cup Soweto Derby on July 27.

Amakhosi have thus far only welcomed one new signing in the form of Zambian international Lazarous Kambole, who has signed a three-year deal coming from Zesco United and will meet his new teammates at the Kaizer Chiefs Village tomorrow.

"The new home and away jerseys for 2019/20 season will be unveiled before the Carling Black Label Cup."
