Chiefs, Pirates battle with Africa's elite

Premiership

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are undoubtedly the top two clubs in South Africa when it comes to their digital footprint, but they are also amongst the top five clubs in Africa.

Chiefs and Pirates both have a massive following on their various social media channels and have long since set the pace when it comes to local shores.

However, it has now been established that Amakhosi and The Buccaneers are amongst the most followed clubs on the continent, near the likes of Al Ahly, Zamalek and Raja Casablanca.

This is according to latest figures tallied up by Digital Sports Africa, which tracks the digital evolution of sports across the continent, as at April 2020.

Mamelodi Sundowns – also considered as one of the PSL's 'big three' – is the only other South African club featured in the top 20 after being pipped to a place inside the top 10 by Egyptian outfit FC Masr and Tunisian giants Club Africain.

Meanwhile, three more local clubs find themselves inside the top 25, while another five are amongst the top 40 on the continent.

Despite now being defunct after being bought over by Cape Umoya United, Platinum Stars' following has them propping up the top 50 clubs, with GladAfrica Championship side Free State Stars also sneaking into the top 60.
