Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt says Kenya international Anthony Akumu was never a midfielder as he starts to impress in defence.
Akumu, 28, joined Chiefs from ZESCO United in January 2020 with a reputation as a powerful midfielder with vast experience on the continent.
With over 40 senior international appearances for the Harambee Stars and four seasons starring in continental football with the Zambian Premier League giants, much was expected for the towering Akumu.
But after struggling to settle into a midfield role since his arrival, Hunt's decision to convert him into a centre-back amid an injury crisis has seemingly revitalised his career.
"He's not a midfielder, he's not a midfield player, no chance," Hunt said after his solid showing in the 2-1 win over Cape Town City this weekend.
"I don't know what he was signed as but he's not a midfield player. He's played the last three, four games because obviously, we've got [injury] problems.
"He's done well, I thought he was excellent [against City] and long may it continue."
