Chiefs not giving up on Downs target

Premiership

KickOff.com has learnt that Kaizer Chiefs are not giving up on acquiring the services of one of Mamelodi Sundowns' players.

According to sources, Amakhosi are looking to re-sign goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse but the stumbling block seems to be that Sundowns are not prepared to let go of their fourth-choice shot-stopper.

Pieterse has been struggling to break into the star-studded Downs team since arriving from neighbours Supersport United back in 2018.

The 29-year-old played just one game for The Brazilians in the 2020/21 campaign, keeping a clean sheet in their goalless draw with Swallows FC last month.

It is understood that Chiefs are now looking to lure the former Bafana Bafana international back to Soweto, where he spent three and a half seasons under then coach Stuart Baxter, who is now back at the club.

With the likes of Itumeleng Khune and Daniel Akpeyi having struggled for consistency, the CAF Champions League semi-finalists have 26-year-old Bruce Bvuma as their current number one.

"It's no secret Chiefs are willing to sign Pieterse but Sundowns still love him so much, and they don't want to see him leave Chloorkop," says a source.

"And because Sundowns do have an option on his contract, it's very unlikely he will leave ahead of the new season."

Former Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is believed to have already signed for the Glamour Boys for next season, after training with the club before their transfer ban appeal was thrown out by CAS last year.
