Kaizer Chiefs’ goalkeeping department has been overlooked in its entirety for the upcoming FIFA break and one of the senior members has since reacted thereto.
Chiefs currently boast three international goalkeepers in Bafana Bafana duo Itumeleng Khune and Bruce Bvuma as well as Daniel Akpeyi, who represents Nigeria.
However, neither of them have made the cut to their respective national teams for the October window, with Akpeyi’s omission from Gernot Rohr's Super Eagles squad perhaps the most surprising given his contribution at Amakhosi this season.
The 33-year-old has since responded to his snub as he faces the risk of also missing out on the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers in November, insisting he has served his time on both the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup stages and his focus is purely on his club at the moment.
“I’m not really looking at being motivated to be called for something. I’m just working on myself and working on my career and to get to the peak of my profession,” responded Akpeyi.
“If I get a call, fine. I think so far in the national team, I’ve played my part having been to the World Cup and Nations Cup, and from the junior to the senior.
“So, I believe I’ve played my part. If whatever I’m doing doesn’t impress anybody then it’s all about me this time.”
