This follows after Amakhosi lost matches to Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup and Mpumalanga Cultural Experience Cup respectively.
Chiefs will start 2018/19 with a league match against Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld this Saturday (15h00).
"I think we need to start to be more positive. It looks like we are a bit down in the field," Cardoso said.
"Maybe pre-season is taking it's toll but that's what it is for. Pre-season is about building towards the season even if we lose these games which is hard on us and the fans. The fans take it the hard way because that's what they think we are taking into a season.
"To the fans, we will definitely lift it. It is a setback for us again but we got Mamelodi Sundowns on the 4th and it's a good start for us for the season."
Cardoso added that the defeats to Downs and City have shown where improvement is needed by the Soweto giants, who have a new coach in Italian tactician Giovanni Solinas following the departure of Steve Komphela in April.
"Games of this nature are very good for us. It shows where we stand at the moment and shows where we need to tweak. We are still playing more defensive which I think is not the type of football Chiefs need to play."
