Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that midfielder George Maluleka has decided to leave the club at the end of the 2019/20 season.
Chiefs are set to start preparing for life after Maluleka after the player confirmed he will be leaving for Mamelodi Sundowns upon the expiry of his contract in June.
The 31-year-old was known to be in negotiations with Amakhosi but an impasse has been reached, with the player opting not to engage in further discussions.
In an effort to explain what unfolded, the club has issued the following statement:
The contract talks between Kaizer Chiefs and midfielder George ‘Mido’ Maluleka have reached an unexpected ending.
Kaizer Chiefs offered the 31-year-old a two-year contract extension + one-year option to renew on his current contract, but he turned it down.
Following a string of negotiations, the player himself revealed to the Club that he has signed a pre-contract with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Notably, Mamelodi Sundowns have not informed Chiefs about their engagements with George Maluleka as protocol dictates.
The former SuperSport United star arrived at Naturena from Tshwane in January 2014 and will close a chapter of six-and-a-half years before embarking on a new one.
