Mashiane's Chiefs absence explained

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter has confirmed Happy Mashiane is still part of the club's plans despite his absence from the squad this season.

Mashiane suffered the anguish of being sent off in Chiefs' first-ever Champions League final as they were beaten by Pitso Mosimane's Ahly side 3-0 back in July.

The 23-year-old made the matchday squad in the MTN8 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns but was not called upon from the bench while he's been out of the squad completely for their opening three league games.

Baxter revealed there are no issues surrounding the development product and it's purely tactical that he's been left out this season after a host of new signings provided Amakhosi with more options.

"He's doing very well and working very hard, the way we played this evening, Happy would probably be competing with Sifiso [Hlanti], as it was, we had [Sibusiso] Mabiliso who played against Sundowns," he said on Sunday.

"We had enough attacking players on the field we have a Khama [Billiat], we've got a Samir [Nurkovic], Bernard [Parker], Keagan [Dolly], Lebo [Manyama[ and at this moment I think they are more versatile, they give us more flexibility than Happy.

"He's working very hard and I'm pleased with him but he's got to push on now and wait for his chance when it comes he needs to take it."

Mashiane has featured 32 times for the Soweto giants, scoring four goals while registering two assists since making his debut in January 2019.
