Chiefs, Sundowns clash called off

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns will not be engaging in a much-anticipated fixture after a decision was taken to postpone the event indefinitely.

Chiefs and Sundowns supporters will be denied the opportunity to engage in banter and bragging rights after Stadium Management SA confirmed the postponement of the annual Shell Helix Ultra Cup friendly due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The SHUC, which is the brainchild of SMSA and sponsored by petrolium giants Shell, has seen two previous editions played at FNB Stadium in 2019 and 2018.

The inaugural event was won by Sundowns with a 2-1 scoreline, before Chiefs claimed the cup with their recent 4-2 victory in October last year.

The two sides, who are both gunning for the 2019/20 Absa Premiership championship, are still set to meet in the current league campaign, which remains suspended amid the ongoing national lockdown.

Given this suspension, SMSA have thus decided that a new date will be determined once the PSL makes a decision on the way forward for both the current season and next season, which is likely to be congested due to its potentially delayed start.
