Motsepe announces Downs promotion

Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe has announced that one of the club's senior members has been promoted to within the technical team structures.

Coach Pitso Mosimane will have a new boss after signing a new four-year contract to extend his stay at the club, with former Head of Youth José Ramón Alexanko earning a promotion.

"We are also excited that José Ramón Alexanko, who played for and captained FC Barcelona and was also the Head of the FC Barcelona Academy, has joined Mamelodi Sundowns as the Head of the Technical Department," said Motsepe in a club statement on Thursday.

"He was also the Director of Football at La Liga club, Valencia CF. The Youth Academy as well as the Senior Team will benefit immensely from his vast experience and expertise."

Alexanko arrived at Chloorkop in September last year to head up Sundowns' development structures but since the departure of Erik Hamren in August 2018, the technical director position has been vacant.

The 64-year-old former Spanish international defender will now be tasked with working more closely with Mosimane in steering the Downs ship at first team and youth level.

Having worked with the likes of Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, it will be interesting to see how he develops the various structures within the club – particularly the senior team, which has already brought plenty of success to the club in recent years.
