Sikhosana names two best SA strikers

Jerry Sikhosana is disillusioned with the dire situation regarding South African strikers and struggles to even create a top five.

The Orlando Pirates legend, who scored some important goals for the Sea Robbers in his heyday, says current strikers are so poor in front of goal that he struggles to count even five of them who are on top of their game at moment.

"Yho! Do I even know them?" Sikhosana replied when asked by to name his best current strikers.

"Who are the top strikers at the moment? Can you tell me at least two? You want five from me and I don't even know one as we speak.

"I hate talking about people who are from outside the country, hence we need to promote our own. I need to talk about our own. To be honest, for now it's Bradley Grobler, maybe followed by Kermit Erasmus and who else?

"I can't say Rhulani Manzini, no he's on and off. Ndumiso Mabena at Celtic is also on and off. Really I don't know because you talk about Arrows' [Knox] Mutizwa, foreigner. Polokwane City, [Puleng] Tlolane on and off, and then you've got [Mohammed] Anas, he is a foreigner.

"You come to Kaizer Chiefs, the latest Djokovic or whatever [Samir Nurkovic] you know, and Khama [Billiat]... we can't talk about those people. You come to Orlando Pirates... worse! That's all that I can say, worse! There is [Austin] Muwowo, there is [Justin] Shonga, there is [Augustine] Mulenga... all foreigners. Thembinkosi Lorch is more of a midfielder-cum-striker.

"We go to Mamelodi Sundowns, who is there? Because you've got midfielders that are being converted into strikers, we are not talking about out-and-out strikers. Themba Zwane, [Lebohang] Maboe, [Sibusiso] Vilakazi, okay [Gaston] Sirino he is a foreigner. You don't have somebody that you can say is a striker.

"At Wits I don't know, [Gift] Motupa is sometimes on the bench, [Mxolisi] Macuphu inconsistent. I don't know who I can single out besides Bradley Grobler and Kermit Erasmus, our own.

"I think for me everybody wants be a star on the ball. You know we used to be called people that are just being fed with everything from the goalkeeper, the defence, the midfield and then we just finished... if you are a striker you are just stupid. Maybe nobody wants to be a striker, everybody wants to be a good ball player. And that's what is killing our game.

"People forget what's the objective of the game, to score goals. Us, we never had strikers' coach or coaching strikers, no. We had this thing in us.

"Let's look at the coaches now, tell me a coach that was an out-and-out striker besides Benni [McCarthy] now? Pitso Mosimane midfielder, Steve Khompela defender, Clinton Larsen more like a left-back-cum-winger, Kaitano Tembo defender, foreigner. I don't know [Ernst] Middendorp if he ever played football in Germany, I don't know. At Pirates Rhulani [Mokwena] never played the game.

"Now you go back and say where are we heading to?

"Bloemfontein Celtic defender [Lehohonolo Seema]. AmaZulu, I don't know if Cavin Johnson played the game. [Bidvest] Wits, Gavin Hunt a defender from Hellenic. Highlands Park, Owen Da Gama, at least you can see how they play the ball forward, not an out-and-out striker but he used to be like a midfielder-cum-striker. Maritzburg United, defensive midfielder Eric Tinkler, Stellenbosch it's a defender in Steve Barker.

"Now I was with the [Nedbank] Ke Yona Team and when we did a lot of tactical work, mostly it was more of how do we shape up the defence, how do we get the midfield to be solid? Doctor [Khumalo] was there, Khabo [Zondo] was there, but going forward we had a problem because not much of me had that impact in terms of how we go forward striker-wise."
