Sikhosana: How to be a Derby hero

Premiership

Jerry Sikhosana has sent a clear message to the players in today's Soweto Derby telling them what they will need to do if they want to become a hero.

The big Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is one of the most-watched football matches all over the world.

This is where players often get a chance to engrave their names in the hearts of the demanding fans.

Though the Buccaneers faithful are feeling confident going into today's match as they've already beaten their neighbours three times this season, Amakhosi followers are crying out for a hero.

Chiefs are facing the possible embarrassment of losing to their biggest rivals for a fourth time in one season.

Pirates will not sympathise with their neighbours though as they try to mount a league title challenge after a number of barren seasons.

It is not everybody who becomes a hero though in South Africa's biggest football fixture, it takes a special player with a special talent to consistently steal the limelight.

"If this thing is in your mind that you want to do it, it is possible you know," ex-Pirates Derby hero Jerry Sikhosana tells KickOff.com.

"We [former Derby heroes] loved playing football besides any circumstances. And we knew what it meant to play a Derby, you will always be remembered. So I think that's the passion that we had in that regard.

"It was all about the passion and the importance of doing well in the Derby so that you will forever be remembered.

"A simple example, Mhango [Pirates striker Gabadinho] was raving when [Thembinkosi] Lorch was not up to the game. Remember what Mhango did in the previous Derbies when he arrived at Pirates. Everybody was talking about him you know being the next Jerry Sikhosana to score a hat-trick I think after scoring a brace if I'm not mistaken in one of the Derbies.

"But now you get somebody like Lorch, who did well you know. [Luvuyo] Memela was close when he scored two goals in a Derby. But where is he now? AmaZulu.

"So when we talk now we are only saying Lorch, Lorch... even though he hasn't reached that stage [of being a true Soweto Derby hero]. But at least he's there."
