Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star Jabulani Mendu says players who are overlooked by Bafana Bafana should not pity themselves.
Household-name players are always rated highly by fans, but that is not always the case when it comes to football as there are a number hardworking players who have not received the recognition or call-ups to the national team.

In some instances they are rated highly by their national teams but underrated in the leagues they play in, or vice versa, and some of the current DStv Premiership stars are either underrated or never considered for Bafana Bafana.
"I didn't represent Bafana Bafana the way I wanted," Mendu tells KickOff.com.
"I'm one person who is a firm believer in faith. If it was written that I will play the number of matches I managed to play for Bafana Bafana then there's nothing I could have done. I appreciate the fact that I was called, I appreciate the experience. There are people who were better than me but never got a call-up so, I had that privilege to be there. I think I've got four caps with Bafana Bafana.
"There are people who have 32 caps but never deserved them. But that's not my call, it's their destiny. Don't envy other people. So me I wouldn't say underrated. I think everybody got what he deserved in that time. We were never underrated. Even if I was called and played 100 caps like Aaron Mokoena, someone else was going to be underrated. To me the national team was an incentive.
"Of course I wanted to play more for Bafana Bafana, but my focus was in my club because they are the ones who were paying me. It's everybody's dream to represent their country but if it's not happening what do you want me to do? Must I lock myself in the room and feel sad? Feel pity for myself?"
Mendu advises current players who find themselves in similar positions not to be hard on themselves as such things are beyond their control.
"There are so many players who deserves to be in the Bafana Bafana mix, but they can't call all of us guys. As much as we can't all play for Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns. You don't play football to play for Bafana Bafana, you play football to make sure that your family lives improved."
