Khoza explains Gauteng's PSL 'bubble'

The PSL has quashed reports the GladAfrica Championship log could be declared final and Ajax Cape Town promoted next season.

With the PSL preparing for the resumption of the 2019/20 season, it was recently suggested that only the flagship Premiership and Nedbank Cup would be completed in line with the proposed plans.

Reports suggested the first division would be cancelled and the current log standings taken as final – giving Ajax automatic promotion and Swallows and Uthongathi the playoff spots.

However, the League’s chairman Irvin Khoza has insisted there has been no such decision from the board of governors, though he failed to rule this out, with another meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 14.

“As for the GladAfrica Championship, the board of governors resolved that all 32 clubs must go into the bubble, which is what was part of the submissions to the minister,” explained Khoza during his media briefing on Monday.

“There’s another BOG meeting taking place tomorrow [Tuesday]. Whether there will be changes is another story. But for now, as things stand, all 32 clubs must go into the bubble.”

As revealed on Saturday, Khoza further confirmed that the biologically safe environment – also referred to as ‘the bubble’ – will indeed be in Gauteng.

“The board of governors resolved that we would play all the games in Gauteng and North West, but we did receive a very good pitch from KwaZulu-Natal,” he added.

“It was considered by the task team but unfortunately because of the application that was submitted, it was resolved that the venues must be Gauteng or North West.

“As we speak now, the PSL has resolved to stick with Gauteng only, because of the advantage that it gives.”
