SuperSport ghost that haunts Pirates

Orlando Pirates come up against SuperSport United and will be looking to end their ‘hoodoo’ at the Mbombela Stadium this evening.

The two sides have met at the Nelspruit venue on four previous occasions, with SuperSport having yet to suffer defeat at their alternative home ground.

Their last encounter saw Pirates suffer a 0-1 defeat back in February of the 2018/19 campaign, which was also their last defeat of the season.

Prior to that, the only time The Buccaneers escaped defeat in Mpumalanga was in April 2018 as they held Matsatsantsa to a goalless stalemate.

In November 2016, the Soweto giants suffered that infamous 6-1 humiliation in the league before getting eliminated from the Telkom Knockout semi-finals with a 1-0 scoreline by the same United outfit a few weeks later.

Bucs also suffered back-to-back Nedbank Cup final defeats to SuperSport – losing 4-1 in 2017 and 3-2 in 2016.

In fact, their overall away record against the Tshwane side is quite dire, having last registered a win back in November 2014 during a league match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
