Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has revealed his thinking behind restoring Itumeleng Khune to goal and dropping Daniel Akpeyi, as well as Q-Innovation targets.
Amakhosi returned to the top of the Absa Premiership table after beating AmaZulu 2-0 at King Zwelithini Stadium on Tuesday.
Captain Khune finally made his much-anticipated return to the starting line-up after more than six months of absence, and the coach said he had a discussion with Akpeyi about it.
"Daniel Akpeyi played a fantastic five games so far, it was a bit tough for me but the truth is from 2006/07 Itumeleng Khune has been in the team, he's the captain and it was the right time for him to return," the German explained.
'We saw him through preparations on how far he is, had a long chat with Akpeyi as he had a fantastic start, it was tough but he understood it and showed a lot of respect about it."
Middendorp also made it clear that the club has bigger targets but if they end up winning the Q1 prize of R1.5-million it would be a bonus for the team.
"We have a very clear target, the beginning of the season it a bit unusual if you ended up in position nine, falling out from position eight," he added.
"We work hard to put players in place, we will reach our target, we want to win every game. I'm not thinking about Q1 whatsoever, if it comes it's fine, perfect no problem we take it."
